We need oil. We need it to power our transport such as cars, trucks, ships, and aeroplanes. But the Earth is running out. What is Anardarko doing to help this? Drilling deeper. DEEPER THAN EVER BEFORE. That is, 2750m into the ocean and through the sea bed -- almost 3 kilometres! The deeper they drill, the greater the risk of an oil spill because of the higher pressure of water on the pipes.
Take a look at the video below. In the Gulf of Mexico, Anadarko drilled 1500m deep into the ocean and left the people of Louisiana and neighbouring states in a crisis. There was a fault in the machinery, but Anadarko ignored it and kept drilling. The rig exploded and fell into the ocean on April 20th 2010. Eleven workers died in the process. After 37 days of oil leaking into the ocean, the American government finally stopped the continuous flow of oil on 15th of July.
"If a blowout occurs [in New Zealand], thousands of barrels of oil could flow into the ocean every day." - Greenpeace
Now think about it.
Before the explosion occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, Anadarko believed that they were prepared for an emergency with sixteen boats with gear on-site. Here in New Zealand, Anadarko believe that having a maximum of THREE boats is all we need to stop the oil spill. Are they out of their minds?
